Origin of the Association

Taiwan’s dental profession has long been a leader among healthcare sectors, whether in the promotion of oral health for schoolchildren, the implementation of preventive care strategies for preschoolers, or the provision of international humanitarian assistance to countries such as Mongolia. In essence, wherever there exists a medically underserved population with special needs, the presence and contributions of Taiwanese dentists are invariably found.

It is therefore most fortunate that a group of dedicated professionals came together to establish the *Taiwan Association for Oral Care of Persons with Special Needs*. This endeavor has been made possible not only through the encouragement of esteemed senior colleagues but also with the enduring support of teams who have long devoted themselves to the cause of oral healthcare. Their collective efforts laid the foundation upon which this Association now stands. We are united in the belief that this initiative reflects our shared obligation to society. Inaction today would only result in further suffering for individuals with special needs due to preventable oral diseases, thereby increasing the public health burden on the nation.
For an island that proudly regards itself as a progressive and civilized society, it would be a moral failing to neglect the care of our fellow citizens with physical and mental disabilities. Accordingly, during the Association’s formative period, we prioritized the assessment of current domestic conditions concerning oral healthcare for persons with special needs and the formulation of effective improvement strategies. By drawing upon successful international models and experiences, we aim to reduce the existing gaps, accelerate alignment with global standards, and effect substantive and lasting change. This reflects the resolute and responsible attitude necessary to address such a challenging yet inescapable issue.

It is particularly meaningful that the founding of this Association coincides with International Human Rights Day. We sincerely hope that, despite our initial limitations in manpower and resources, more individuals of goodwill will join our cause. Furthermore, we call upon the government, professional dental associations, and all relevant stakeholders to collaborate in the spirit of compassion and sustained commitment. The establishment of this Association signifies the first crucial step toward comprehensive oral healthcare for persons with special needs in Taiwan—ensuring that love and care extend to all, leaving no one behind.
